This presentation will focus on the legacy and implications of the United States Public Land Survey; in particular
its Ohio origins. Attention will be made of key events and figures throughout the history of survey and how
ideas and concepts of units of measurement were transferred from the Old World to the New World. Special
mention will be given of the role of Thomas Jefferson in his attempts to create a national standard of measure
and how his ideals of democracy are interwoven into the US Public Land Survey. The talk will highlight the role
of Ohio, prominent Ohioans and the legacy of the PLSS still visibly manifest across America.
