Fusing LiDAR and Ortho-Imagery to Determine Impervious Surfaces |

For years, municipalities and local governments have determined impervious surfaces through manual methods,
involving interpretation using stereo-imagery or by heads-up digitizing from orthos. Both methods are time
consuming, costly and done infrequently. To provide a timely and cost effective approach, the City of
Columbus (Department of Public Utilities) has initiated a process of delineating impervious surfaces by utilizing
ortho-imagery and LiDAR (2007 Ohio Statewide Imagery Project). Fusing the ortho-imagery and LiDAR
together provides an accurate means of deriving impervious surfaces located through-out the City and enables
the City to more frequently update the impervious surface layer. The presentation will cover the existing method used to delineate impervious surfaces and explain the benefits realized from implementing the automated process. Focus will be given to the technology and methodology utilized to automate the delineation of impervious surfaces and how the updated impervious surfaces are incorporated into the City's ESRI based GIS. |
