Many GIS projects use point information as it has been directly collected in the field. While the 3-dimensional
coordinate collected during this process is sufficient for most inventory purposes, it is below the positional
accuracy standard required for sewers and drains. The inventory of the existing sewer system as needed for
the design of the I-70/I-70 improvements in Columbus merged the speed and technology of GIS data collection
with the accuracy of survey data to produce a complete sewer network. Additionally, the use of electronic GIS
data collection greatly improved the speed of the QA/QC process, resulting in a better and more efficient
product.
